The use of cool colors for the water and shadows of the harbor and boats in the image give the feeling of a cold (or cool) morning while the warmer colors of the sunrise and sky contrast sharply with the rest of the scene and draw attention to the sunrise. I enjoy this painting most because the concentration is not on the detail but more how one would perceive this scene. Critics used the title to name the distinct group of artists 'Impressionists. The title of this work was used by the art critic Louis Leroy to coin the term “Impressionism” meant as an insult but adopted by the impressionist community as their namesake anyway.
